In 2022 information officially emerged that the European Union (EU) will have a single charger for portable devices by the end of 2024, but now it has decided to make the EU remember that 2024 is the year of the arrival of USB-C to all devices, one of the most important changes it has promoted in recent years.
For those who haven't noticed yet, the USB-C will become the standard for charging ports within the EU, which in one way or another will end up affecting other markets, or adjacent territories. All electronic devices will have to respect this standard and offer users a common interface for charging. In its publication on X (formerly Twitter), the European Union reinforced that this measure defends the promotion of technological innovation. It now focuses on charging electronic devices and preventing market fragmentation.
New devices with USB-C present
This will not be an obligation that applies to just one category of equipment. The European Union wanted to create a more comprehensive measure and thus the door USB-C will have to be available for smartphones, tablets, headphones, portable speakers, consoles, readers eBook (only in Dutch at the moment), keyboards, mice and portable GPS systems.
The change has already started to take shape during 2023 and one of the biggest changes arrived with the new iPhone. If USB-C is already the norm in most Android devices, in the case of Apple, and after much opposition, the arrival of the iPhone 15 with a USB-C interface changed a lot, being also extended to the rest of the range of devices.
The gains that this measure brings are obvious, especially when it comes to savings on chargers, which thus become universal. At the same time, it will help prevent different producers from unjustifiably limiting the loading speed.
