We came back with another series of posts with the theme “Resolutions”Where expressions that are already part of our daily lives like; HD, Full HD, 4k, 8k and others will be covered here.

What is resolution?

Some people confuse resolution with screen size. Even if this is not your case, it is convenient to learn how to measure a screen before we get to the explanation of resolutions:

By default, the screen size is measured in inches (inch, in English). Each inch is equal to 2,54 centimeters or 25,4 millimeters and can also be represented by the quotation mark, for example: 40 ″ (40 inches).

But this is somewhat inaccurate information, as the screens are usually rectangular, with this "rectangle" being able to have different proportions horizontally and vertically, right? Yes. That is why the measurement is made considering the diagonal of the screen.

In other words, we measured the size of the screen by calculating the distance in inches from the lower left corner to the upper right corner (or vice versa), as shown in the following figure:

Screen resolution

Knowing that by default, the screens are rectangular in shape. This means that the area of these devices considers their width (horizontal) and their height (vertical). This is where we arrived the resolution: The image displayed on the screen is divided into tiny points called pixels. You can understand a pixel to be the smallest size an image can have.

Pixels are arranged in rows (horizontal) and columns (vertical). The resolution, therefore, is nothing more than the measurement that indicates how many pixels there are in each row and in each column of the screen.

Thus, a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels indicates that the screen is capable of displaying 1920 pixels per line and 1080 per column. It's like an array. As a rule, the first number refers to the width; the second, at the height of the screen.
