A report shared by the GSM Association indicates that 55% of the world's population – around 4,3 billion people – have a smartphone as a mobile device.

The report also notes differences in the way people in different regions access mobile Internet. While 69% of cell phone users in North America, Southeast Asia and the Pacific use 4G devices, Africa and the Middle East still use a 3G network.

There is also the important issue of connectivity, with the report indicating that 38% of people living in areas with mobile Internet coverage still do not have access.
