By the end of this year there should be 1,2 billion connections worldwide 5G, almost double the value recorded last year. The accounts are from CCS Insight and indicate that after the delays inherent in the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, the fifth generation is gaining pace and traction. The trend is set to continue and in 2026, the same company believes that the number of 5G connections will already rise to 4 billion, with Western Europe and North America leading the growth.

The consultant points out several factors, as responsible for accelerating technology, such as the increasingly widespread availability of devices with 5G connectivity. He recalls that 5G has already become a standard feature of high-end equipment and that it is also being included in an increasing number of mid-range equipment. This year, the company predicts that 44% of mobile phones sold will already support 5G.

Contributing to the expansion of technology will also be the redefinition of strategies by operators and the arrival on the ground of several networks and respective services, whose launch had been postponed.

"While the early years of 5G were overshadowed by the Covid-19 pandemic and the problems it created, the market is now in a stronger position as we enter the second half of 2022.“, points out James Manning Smith, senior analyst at CCS Insight.

The official recalls that the global economic and geopolitical perspectives for 2022 remain discouraging, but the advance of 5G seems to be able to be immune to the crisis and continue at a good pace. The segment has been able to source its supplies from component manufacturers, as it is part of a more profitable part of the market and with higher profit margins, where demand also remains strong.

Data collected by CCS Insight also show that 99% of the 5G connections that will be active at the end of the year will be integrated into smartphones, tablets or laptops. The company highlights the accelerated growth of fixed 5G connections, which will rise from 160% to seven million in 2022, a trend driven by the strong strategy of some operators in this area, especially in the United States.

Finally, by 2026 CCS Insight estimates that there will be 83 million fiber connections with 5G and 455 million Internet of Things connections, including Machine to Machine connections.
