A Microsoft is working on a new "modern" version of Windows with better security and faster updates. The initiative, called "CorePC", would allow Windows to better scale to different devices while supporting legacy applications.
CorePC would target many of the same goals as the scrapped Windows Core operating system (including the also canceled Windows 10X), which Microsoft announced as a modular modernization of its operating system. CorePC would use “state separation” and split Windows into multiple partitions, similar to iOS and Android. This can make it difficult for the malware infect the system while making updates faster.
CorePC would allow Microsoft to offer multiple editions of Windows for different hardware, supporting specific features and applications for each. For example, an education-focused variant might have a lightweight footprint like ChromeOS, running just the browser. Edge, web apps, Office and emulated Android apps.
On the other hand, CorePC can also offer full versions of Windows that support all current Windows 11 modern desktop features and capabilities. (A “Neon” compatibility layer would allow the operating system to support legacy Windows apps .)
