AFRICELL fined $150 for violating the Personal Data Protection Act

A AFRICELL, the fourth mobile operator in Angola, was fined US$150 for violating the duty to notify and request prior authorization from the Data Protection Agency (APD) for the processing of its customers' personal data.

According to a statement from the APD, the measure came out of a recent decision by the Board of Directors of the Data Protection Agency.

"The electronic communications operator collected various categories of personal data such as the name of the data subject, telephone number, address, gender, age, interests, credit or debit card details, bank details and other payment information, interests and preferences, location data, times of making and receiving calls, including identification document”, the document reads.

In the Angolan context, adds the statement, in addition to the consent of the holders of personal data, the entity that handles this information must notify the APD before carrying out a treatment or more treatments that are totally or partially authorized, intended for the pursuit of one or more interconnected purposes.
