A Africell will focus on increasing financial literacy with the implementation of education projects on digital money, according to the project director afrimoney, Kátia Conceição.

According to the person responsible, at this moment the campaign is favoring the community of zungueiras and informal market vendors, as they “greatly influence the management of physical money".

From what was revealed, in the first phase of the project, Africell has already trained more than 500 zungueira women and vendors from informal markets in Luanda who received training on empowerment through inclusion and financial literacy. The beneficiaries were selected by the Angolan zungueira associations and the association of informal market sellers.

"Many people, when they go to the market, do not pay with a card, they pay with cash, in cash. So we want to understand whether this strategy, of getting those people who currently accept cash to switch to digital money, is probably a way forward.“, he underlined.

The 500 training participants will also receive additional income, costing around Kz 7.000 to Kz 8.000 to carry out transactions, as well as a kit that includes a cell phone. According to Kátia Conceição, the traders received the amounts only once.

The project was launched last year in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and had an investment of five million USD. Training on empowerment through inclusion and financial literacy is the first activity of this project. According to the person responsible for the project, there will be other activities, which will not just be training.

Kátia Conceição says that only later will the project be assessed to decide which steps to follow.

"Let's see if it had the effect we wanted and, if so, we'll extend it. Maybe not just for women, but for other small traders. We still don't have the final design of what it will be like, but it certainly won't end here in Luanda".
