Recently the information has emerged giving assurances that the Microsoft to build two Data Centers in South Africa. But it seems that another giant in the world of technology is eyeing this African country. Yes, Amazon is planning to allocate its first data centers on the African continent.

These first Amazon Web Services (AWS), the Cloud Services Platform Amazon.com which offers database computing, database storage, content delivery and other features to help enterprises grow, these data centers will be located in South Africa and will target organizations, startups and companies in sub-Saharan Africa.

Benefits of locally hosted data centers

As Amazon also recognizes, one of the main benefits of having data centers in the country is that organizations will be able to provide lower latency connections to end users. Another important benefit is related to the question of data sovereignty.

Amazon also assured South African customers that content and data stored in AWS data centers will not be removed from the country without their consent.

The only potential drawback of this announcement is that it could potentially consume the market share of several local startups that have started in recent years and offer services similar to those offered by AWS. However, with their knowledge of local markets, startups may be able to keep up and perhaps even partner with Amazon in their respective regions.
