Angola wants digital legislation to be created to combat the misuse of social networks, according to deputy Idalina Valente.

The diplomat who was speaking on the sidelines of the Forum of Women Parliamentarians, in Manama, capital of the Kingdom of Bahrain, said that the approval of adequate legislation will prevent or reduce the occurrence of cyber crimes, with irreparable damage to the lives of people, organizations and institutions.

He added that this measure is not intended to restrict freedom of expression or jeopardize democracy, but only to encourage the correct use of social networks.

"It is not restricting freedom of expression, but defending human rights, particularly those of women, who are most affected by the misuse of social media, and democracy. We also want to avoid the damage that the misuse of digital networks causes to people, institutions and organizations“, he underlined.

In her speech, Idalina Valente praised the benefits of social networks when well used, but reiterating that when used to defame, slander and attack people's personalities, they can cause, among other damages, the death of the offended.

As for the issues addressed at the forum, the deputy stressed that women continue to show leadership and resilience, with actions that contribute to the social and political well-being of communities.

It should be noted that the Forum of Women Parliamentarians took place on the sidelines of the 146th General Assembly of the Interparliamentary Union, which ran until the 15th of this month.

During the event, parliamentarians analyzed the organization's strategies on climate change, accountability at all levels, as well as the transformation of speeches into actions to combat climate change.
