[Angola] First impressions of Unitel's 4G LTE network and its 12 Mbit / s

7403

During the past week, I and another Less wires addicted to tests, we had the opportunity to check the marketing (or not) of SIM cards compatible with the 4G network of Unitel.

The answer was positive, the cards are being traded at the standard price: 720 AKZ.

It remained to know if it worked. My card was not even opened yet, for one simple detail, I do not have one 4G device to test. The question that doesn't stop: “what kind of idiot buys a 4G SIM without first having a device to test it”? The answer: idiots of my type. Fail. If it's any consolation, I bought it to confirm that they were selling and to ensure that I would have mine, in case they ran out or Unitel stopped selling SIM 4G.

But let's get to what matters, first impressions, speed and the like ...

The newest member of the MF team was responsible for this (consider this a baptism), yes, welcome to the team, Jordão Neto, that is, J Killa!

From the tests carried out in several arteries of the capital city, Luanda, we show here the most satisfactory result obtained in the Talatona area. Recalling that this network is only active in the city of Luanda.

Unitel 4G Less Threading Test

12,23 Mbit / s for an 4G network, is still not impressive, but we'll see if Unitel improves both coverage and speed.

In comparative terms, the Movicel got 32 Mbit / s in Cabinda, in the testing phase, with unofficial information claiming to have reached speeds around 50 Mbit / s (I hope so).

As for prices, this is a topic for another article, don't be in a hurry ...

  1. I am interested in purchasing a SIM card compatible with the 4G network, since I am using
    An iPhone 5.

  2. Good article.
One detail: why in the screenshot of the test done appears as a network of the iPhone or iPad (?) To Movicel instead of UNITEL?

What is the result of choosing a server outside Angola, on speedtest.net?

    Cpts

    • Greetings Jorge,

Movicel appears because that was the Chip on the phone. The active (data) network was Wi-Fi, using Unitel's 4G Router, available in stores.

As for testing with a server outside Angola, we will have to do it.

Thanks for the suggestion and always come back 🙂

      • I will certainly attend more regularly, especially when it comes to matters about telecommunications in Angola.

        Cpts,

  3. Hello MF brothers !!! Rather, I want to tell you that I like your work.
But in this article on the tests carried out on Unitel's 4G LTE network, I believe (it is a criticism) that there is an error on your part. In the image that posted the network that appears is movicel. But I believe that you have connected to a hotspot as shown in the image and maybe reached that speed for this reason. How about doing the test directly from 4G device ???

  4. Hello Cognitive. I don't know if this is a new wave for telephone companies in this country to launch products without advertising them, but (without haste) is it possible to finally tell us how much Unitel's 4G plans cost? The company, one of the first in the world to use this type of technology, still does not have a single line about 4G on its website !!! Very strange…

    • AWS greetings,

It is a failure of Unitel not to make this clear on its website and its sales outlets, I have already passed some and received different information.

On launch day, Unitel says it would have 2 plans:
      - For Cell Phones - 4GB
      - For PCs (Tablets) - 30 GB + 30 GB (overnight traffic)

At this moment, the 4G Router and SIM cards are available, whose activation depends on Unitel technicians (ie, the SIM is the same, Unitel must activate the “4G configuration”).

  5. Cognitive,
thank you for the tips! As for SIM cards, the information I have (from someone in Unitel's Marketing Department) is that a new card is needed. Apparently, according to my source, the 'old' card does not have the technological capacity to work with 4G. Anyone who wants to keep the same number must request a duplicate. But you need a new card. They seem to have said something different. As for plan prices, what can you tell us? Thanks.

  6. Unitel's 4G internet prices:

    On mobile (most expensive plan):
    5Gb Plan (1250 UTT) Kz 9000

    At home:
    Kz 30000 Router

    The two most expensive plans:
    Flat 15Gb + 15Gb (2500 UTT) Kz 18000 *
    Flat 30Gb + 30Gb (5000 UTT) Kz 36000 *

    * Additional Gb's are to be used between 02 am and 00 am.

30Gb for Kz 18000 does not seem very expensive. Now we just need to know if the speed is really 10 - 12Mbps. Even less than half that figure is good speed for surfing anywhere in the world!

    • Tomorrow there will be an article about the speed of the network ... good news on the way.

PS: The Router is being sold at twice that price.
And the 30 GB is a little “adapted”. How many people will be awake from 2 am to 7 am? Still, 15 GB + (extra) is already great.

  7. Dear,

I have an unlocked 4G router where I put a Unitel 4G card I am in the center of Luanda (African League), but the router is only picking up 3G network. The tariff I bought was 5GB for 60 days. Does anyone know if I need to do any special configuration? Thanks.

    • First, could you give the Router's narca / model?

Then you will have to confirm that the 4G service is actually active on the SIM card and finally, see the Router's settings to make sure that the 4G option is active.
