A Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), returned to the top position among the largest smartphone manufacturers in the world, surpassed its main rival, the South Korean Samsungin the fourth quarter of 2017, according to data released by IDC.

The result was achieved despite the fact that the US sold less iPhones at the end of the year, which generated a decrease of 1,3% in the number of units sold. Samsung continues to lead the market when considering sales throughout the year of 2017.

Apple's new models have played a key role in driving the company ahead of Samsung in the fourth quarter of 2017, notes IDC's mobile analytics result, referring to the 8 and X iPhones launched last year by the company.

Samsung, on the other hand, sold 74,1 million smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2017, down 4,4% from the 77,5 million sold the previous year. Thanks to performance for the rest of the year, the South Korean company recorded annual sales growth of 1,9%, reaching 317,3 million units, compared to 311,4 million in the previous year.

Apple continues to prove that having multiple models at different prices is a good predictor of bringing more users to iOS ”, points out IDC. Behind Apple and Samsung, other brands that appear in the ranking include Chinese Huawei, Xiaomi and Oppo.
