O Central Bank of Angola started a digital transformation project to modernize its technological infrastructure and leverage the latest innovations. This effort resulted in substantial benefits, increased capabilities and agility of the bank and laid the foundation for future innovations.

Armindo Fortes, IT Director at Banco Nacional de Angola (BNA), explains that, “although our previous SAP system was innovative for our country's financial services sector, its outdated nature and extensive customization necessitated a change . With the support of our valued partners at PwC and SAP, we undertook a project to replace our legacy system and introduce new capabilities crucial to the bank’s operations.”

As the institution responsible for issuing and managing Angola's national currency, supervising the banking system and defining monetary policies, the BNA collaborated closely with implementation partner PwC and SAP to ensure the success of the project.

Tito Tavares, Director of PwC Angola, highlights the project's objectives, stating that, “our team identified key opportunities for digital transformation, including migration to SAP's advanced S/4HANA platform to unlock new business processes and improve digitalization and automation. Additionally, the Cash Management solution has been updated to align with Inventory Management capabilities, strengthening treasury and liquidity for local financial institutions. The project also provided robust management reporting capabilities to support the BNA’s oversight role.”

The implementation of SAP S/4HANA has produced several benefits, including improved system performance, simplified management reporting and a foundation for launching new products and services to strengthen Angola's financial system. Fortes notes that additional solutions such as SAP BW4/HANA and SAP Ariba are already being integrated, driving further improvements in business processes and data exchange efficiency.

BNA is prepared for future growth and innovation. Through effective change management initiatives and ongoing training, priority was given to user adoption of the new system, ensuring that implementation translates into tangible business results.

Kholiwe Makhohliso, General Manager of SAP Africa, emphasizes the importance of adopting technology in banking operations, stating that “by adopting the latest innovations from SAP, Banco Nacional de Angola is prepared to improve operational efficiency, reduce costs and provide decision makers real-time insights. With a roadmap for future innovations, BNA is well positioned to harness the benefits of digital transformation in the coming years.”
