Financial inclusion has been on the BNA's agenda. Several initiatives have been launched, but none of them should be as impactful as this: attribution of a Payment Service Provider license to Unitel Serviços Financeiros Móvel (SU).

On the 14th of September it was possible to find Diário da República, 105rd series, No. XNUMX, the official announcement of Unitel Mobile Financial Services (SU). Practically a month later, the BNA announces that the license for this division of Unitel has been granted.

On 16 October, by order of the Governor of the National Bank of Angola, José de Lima Massano, the National Bank of Angola granted a payment service provider license to Unitel Serviços Financeiros Móveis (SU), SA, at its request. . The granting of this license is in line with one of the priority actions of the National Plan for Financial Inclusion, which involves ensuring greater access to the financial services network for the population.
With the granting of a Payment Service Provider license to UNITEL Serviços Financeiros Móvel (SU), SA, the National Bank of Angola intends to massify financial inclusion through mobile and instant transfers, commonly known as mobile payments or mobile money.

After the launch of Bankita accounts as well as simplified accounts, the National Bank of Angola takes another step towards increasing the number of citizens with access to basic financial services for the equivalent of 50% of the adult population, by the end of 2022.

In addition, bearing in mind that financial inclusion is a fundamental condition for sustainable economic development, Banco Nacional de Angola has participated in actions leading to the creation of a modern and inclusive payment ecosystem. The new payment system law, the content of which will allow the entry of new types of financial institutions (fintechs) as well as the Payment System Innovation Laboratory (www.lispa.ao) are some of these actions.

In several events we saw Unitel talking about opening “Mobile Money”, now it seems that it is a fait accompli. Will the other mobile operator (s) follow the same path?
