Scams and online scams register an increase in Brazil

Scams have more than tripled in five years in Brazil, where virtual scams have also skyrocketed, particularly after the Covid-19 pandemic, revealed an annual report released by the Brazilian Public Security Forum.

The State of São Paulo, which concentrates the largest economy and the largest population in Brazil, had the highest number of these types of crime in 2022. There were 638.629 scams registered in 2022, compared to 382.110 in 2021.

In the year-to-year comparison, there were 649,9 scams per 100 inhabitants in Brazil in 2021, a number that jumped 37,9% to 896 scams per 100 inhabitants in 2022.

According to the data, three Brazilians were victims of a scam every minute in 2022.

The greatest growth occurred among people who suffered electronic scams, which are characterized by the use of social networks, telephone contacts or sending emails to induce the person to fraud.

According to the same survey, 200.322 cases of this type of crime were registered by victims in 2022 in Brazil compared to 120.470 records compiled in 2021, numbers that indicate an increase of 66,2%.

The Brazilian Security Yearbook has been produced since 2007 and produced with data and official indicators collected from the security secretariats of the 27 Brazilian states.

In the edition released this Thursday, the rate of violent deaths fell, but all indicators of domestic violence and violence against women increased.
