Multibox cards with chip are the majority in the Angolan market

Last September, the number of Magnetic Stripe Cards (TARJA) suffered a reduction of 68% compared to the same period last year, while cards based on the EMV Standard, commonly known as chip cards, recorded an evolution of around 55%.

These numbers were revealed in an investigation by MERCADO magazine, based on data linked to the MERCADO website. Interbank Services Company (EMIS), also verifying a notable reduction in the number of stripe cards compared to those with EMV technology, since 72% of the ATM cards that circulated in September were cards with a chip, while last year the volume of stripe cards was higher, exactly 50,4 %.

As for monthly terms, it should be noted that last September magnetic stripe cards dropped 7%, in contrast to EMV cards which grew 1%.

BUT: Payments via ATMs increase 88,3% in 2021

On the other hand, in the same period there was an increase of 400 thousand multicaixa cards compared to the same period last year, when registering a total of 6,9 million cards against 6,5 million in 2021. In short, 87,5% of the total are active.

Regarding monthly numbers, the number of cards in circulation has fluctuated, where in September 2022 there was a reduction of 100 thousand cards compared to last month, a reduction that only stood out in the number of active cards.
