China creates the first processor entirely made by an AI

The conflict between United States and China it will hardly have an end in sight and the advanced technologies of Artificial Intelligence are the most recent motto for discord between the two nations.

The most recent news, based on the report “Semiconductor Industry Vertical and Horizontal”, reveal that a team from the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences used Artificial Intelligence technology to design and draw the world's first fully automatic CPU chip without any human intervention .

The document with all the information about the project was released at the end of June 2023 and can be consulted here.

The processor, called Qimeng No. 1 or Enlightenment No. 1, was created from the RISC-V instruction set with a 32-bit architecture, based on the BSD Binary Speculation Diagram (BSD) algorithm. The intelligent engine managed to generate 4 million logic gates in a total of 5 hours, which is 4.000 times more than the chip that can be designed by GPT-4.

BUT: China in the conquest of Artificial Intelligence

This chip was put to work in the Linux operating system where the SPEC CPU2000 test was carried out and it was concluded that this processor offers a performance similar to the Intel 486.

Qimeng No. 1 is therefore the world's first fully automatically generated processor chip without any manual intervention. It has a 65 nm manufacturing process and a frequency of 300 MHz.

However, for now, the level of these processors still cannot be compared with the current generation of advanced CPUs. But as AI technology is advancing at a breakneck pace, possibly in a short time there will be more news in this area, contributing to better and more automatic chip design.

In addition, it is expected that processors generated only by AI will be able to reach or even surpass the level designed by human experts within 5 or 10 years and, eventually, anyone will be able to create a chip without exactly being a professional in the field.
