A Google has announced a new feature for Chrome that aims to alert the user when a password used online has already been discovered on the web. The feature will work with all sites that have credentials stored in the browser.

The idea is that, when trying to log in again, the program will automatically scan databases of information revealed and warn if the user has been compromised. In addition, the tool should also tell you if your password is being used other services and will recommend switching to strengthen security.

The technology was built on top of a Chrome extension of the same name, launched earlier this year and has been downloaded over a million times. According to the company, nearly half of users found that their passwords were compromised.

More and more people are expected to use the alerts service as it will no longer be necessary to install a browser plugin, increasing the chance of preventing attacks. Currently, the Password Checkup extension accumulates over 950 thousand installations.

In a survey by the giant, more than 4 billions of passwords were compromised due to third party leaks. Google's goal now is to default this tool to Chrome and other Google services.
