Keeping your files safe on Mac OS

2307

OSXThe operating system of Apple, Mac OS or OS X, has a tool that allows us to create an encrypted disk image, to save our files more securely, preventing malicious people from eavesdropping when we’re not around. This image will be saved on your own system (you can move it to an External Disk or Pen Drive if necessary).

Creating a disk and encrypted image is extremely easy, because we even feel more secure when we leave other people in front of our computer, and knowing that our secret files will not be compromised if a person is scanning our system. And accessing this image is the easiest thing in the world, with just a few clicks and entering the password, and when you're done working, don't forget to eject the Disc.

And using the OS X tool itself, we'll show you how to create our own Image.

First, what we should do is locate the disk Utility (Disk Utility) (or we can go on our Macintosh HD hard drive -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility)

After opening the Disk Utility, in your toolbar select a New image.

After opening the image dialog below, we will make the necessary settings as we please.

First we will choose the Image Name where it is written "Save As"and "Name“, Then choose the location where we want to save the image, in my case I chose a folder with the name Applications. And the size of the image you choose it according to your preference, in my case I customized for 10 GB.

O Format can remain the same “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” ["Mac OS Expanded (Chronologically)") or you can change to the format that suits you.

As we seek maximum security, it is preferable to use the Cryptography 256-bit BEA (safer but slower). Plus the good thing about 256-bit AES encryption is that it ensures that someone without our password and without a Supercomputer is impossible to crack. Curiosity: AUS government and large corporations use the same encryption.

A Partition you can leave the origin or choose one of your preference, in my case did not change.

Image Format (Image Format)I used the "Sparse disk image",  Recommended.  Because the size we choose for our image (in my case 10 GB), it will not be used immediately on our disk. The 10 GB I choose or the size you choose will grow to reach the defined limit.

Secure Files on Mac-3

After following all the steps above, we must press the button "Create" (Create). Please do not put me a password of the type (12345, registration number, phone number, Mother's name, Girlfriend's name or date of birth, whoever it is).

Since we were looking for maximum security to keep something so important and confidential in encryption “256-bit AES ”we must put a Secure Password.

After selecting your super password, enter twice to confirm. We should disable the "Remember password in my keychain" and push the button ok, and wait a few seconds for the image disc to be created.

And here is our Image Disk, ready to save whatever we want to 7 keys.

Secure Files on Mac-5

And whenever we want to access our image, we must locate it, give it two clicks so that it can load, enter our password and it will be mounted like a USB PenDrive or External Disk. And most important whenever we finish using it, we must never forget to Eject it. We must make sure that we keep only the copy of our secret files inside the Image and choose a Secure Password that is not easy to forget because we can not afford to write down the password anywhere.
