The GSMA represents the interests of mobile network operators worldwide, bringing together approximately 800 operators with more than 300 companies in the broader ecosystem of mobile networks, including mobile device manufacturers, software companies, providers and other members of the mobile industry. The GSMA is known for organizing major events such as Mobile World Congress. As a result of these connections, the GSMA has privileged data from the mobile market. From time to time the organization provides reports indicating the state of mobile technologies and forecasts for the coming years.

4G takes command

In 2019, 4G will become the leader in mobile network technology worldwide, with a number of connections that will exceed 3 billion. An important milestone for the mobile industry, about 10 years since the launch of commercial 4G services. Meanwhile, the mobile industry continues to make progress with 5G, including successful trials worldwide and approval new radio specifications in December of 2017.

A number of 5G mobile commercial launches are expected over the next three years in North America and leading markets in Asia and Europe. China, the US and Japan will be the top-level 5G connections in 2025, while Europe as a whole will continue to make progress with 5G deployments. In total, these four economies will account for more than 70% of the 1,2 billion of 5G connections expected globally by the end of this period.

Up to 2025, two-thirds of the mobile connections (excluding the IoT mobile) worldwide will operate in high-speed networks, with 4G representing 53% of total mobile SIM and 5G to 14%.

4G in Sub-Saharan Africa

The GSMA predicts that in 2015 the adoption of the 4G in Sub-Saharan Africa will reach 29%, ie an increase of 4% per year.

Companies like Unitel, Movicel and Netone have been expanding their 4G networks in Angola, corroborating the data provided in the report.

It is clear that the future of mobile connectivity will pass through the 4G and further into the 5G. Are the Angolan operators ready for this challenge?
