Conference will present the opportunities of Space Science sector in Africa

From the 27th to the 29th of April 2022, the conference “Increasing students' interest and engagement in space exploration”, which aims to show teachers and students the importance of knowing and understanding what the Space Science sector is and the career opportunities it offers.

Taking place in Johannesburg, South Africa, the event aims to introduce students that “Space” does not mean they have to be an astronaut, and will provide a great opportunity for African teachers, administrators, education officials and students to become acquainted with space exploration in the curriculum and with each other. Space education experts at the event will share new teaching methodologies with African institutions intending to make a lasting connection so that the event serves as a transferable model for other K-12 institutions and will carry the deep space contributions and social engagement of future space leaders

According to the organization, the conference aims to bring together teachers, administrators, managers, students, and experts in space education to discuss current challenges and innovative solutions to increase student interest and engagement in space exploration.

This event also aims to provide teachers with a first-hand opportunity to learn about how important exploration of space in the curriculum is in early childhood education and beyond.

Conference Objectives

• Participants will gain an understanding of skills that can be taught to students that translate to future real-world professional success in space. This includes space engineering concepts and teamwork skills, as well as interpersonal skills such as service, communication, leadership and civic engagement.

• Teachers will understand how to introduce new space-based lessons directly into classrooms to impact even more students.

• Education administrators and staff will learn how to introduce career planning to parents and students that will affect the spatial pipeline when students choose space as a major.

• Participants will gain skills that translate into future real-world career success in space. This includes space readiness and teamwork skills, as well as interpersonal skills such as service, communication, leadership and civic engagement.
