The new coronavirus and the “Black lives matter” movement were the most talked about topics in the Twitter in 2020, according to a list released yesterday by that social network. The hashtag # Covid-19 and its variants "has been used almost 400 million times worldwide", making the pandemic "unsurprisingly" the most significant event of the year, the social network said in a statement.

The second most used keyword worldwide was #BlackLivesmatter, related to the American movement with the same name that denounces police violence against African Americans.

The movement expanded on social media in the United States and around the world after the death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old African American who died of suffocation by a policeman during his detention.

“Political and social issues had an important impact on the platform,” said Twitter, who also noted a strong mobilization around the hashtag #UighursLivesMatter, without revealing numbers, which was “particularly retransmitted” to express support for Uighurs, in China.

As for the methodology in preparing the list, the American social network indicates that it did not consider “content that offers rewards in exchange for subscriptions, retweets or likes”.

Worldwide, the most shared 'tweet' and also the one that got the most 'likes' since the creation of this social network was the one published by the account of American actor Chadwick Boseman announcing his death from cancer.
