Artificial intelligence in Portuguese and digital inclusion, sustainability and emerging technologies are topics under debate, today and Thursday, at the 2nd Lusophone Internet Governance Forum (FLGI), in Cape Verde.

The event will bring together representatives from governments, companies and various organizations from Portuguese speaking countries, following the first meeting, held a year ago, at the Museum of the Portuguese Language, in São Paulo, Brazil.

The program starts today, in Cidade Velha, on the island of Santiago, with a debate on how to increase the representation of the Portuguese language in the machine learning models that feed artificial intelligence and the importance of review, considering the multilingualism of Portuguese-speaking countries.

On Thursday, in the capital, Praia, the focus will be on the challenges faced by Portuguese-speaking countries to reduce info-exclusion, as well as the strategies and initiatives adopted to integrate rural areas and less favored communities.

According to the International Telecommunication Union, the introduction of new technologies can worsen exclusion, something that “is already happening with 5G”.

Global estimates show that “89% of the population in high-income countries is covered by 5G“, but “in low-income countries, only 1% of the population is covered”, said Cosmas Zavazava, director of the organization, in the presentation of the 2023 global report.

"3G — not even 4G — remains by far the most prevalent mobile broadband technology in poorer countries, where more than 20 percent of the population remains off the grid.“He concluded.

The forum is organized by LusNIC, which brings together the entities responsible for managing, registering and maintaining top-level domains in Portuguese-speaking countries, the National Communications Authority (ANACOM) of Portugal, the Multisectoral Regulatory Agency for the Economy (ARME) of Cape Verde, the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (Cgi.br), the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) of Portugal, the DNS.pt Association, which manages the PT domain, and the Information and Coordination Center (Nic.br) of Brazil.
