Opportunities for African programmers are growing, study finds

Opportunities for African programmers continue to grow, whether in Africa or around the world. Currently, African startups are responsible for hiring more than half of local promoters, with foreign companies outside the continent hiring 38% of the remaining talent.

While Africa has a nascent developer ecosystem, these latest statistics suggest an upswing for the continent's top talent – those with strong programming skills in web and mobile application development.

And this competition seems to be having a positive effect on wages and other forms of compensation as well.

"More African programmers are gaining full-time jobs due to both the increased demand for local startups and the global demand for remote technical talent.”, reports the Africa Developer Ecosystem 2021 report.

BUT: Africa has seen a rapid growth of developers in recent times

Despite the 11% increase in the average remuneration of professionals in the year 2022, junior developers saw a decrease of up to 9% in remuneration as a result of the oversupply of junior promoters and the perception of lower competence levels.

In terms of gender, as expected, more challenges than men, given their more junior positions and the lack of support for child care during the covid-19 pandemic.

"Women are 12% less likely to have written their first line of code before they turn 18 than male developers”, writes the study.
