Global information technology (IT) costs will grow by 5,1% in 2022. In its latest forecasts, the Gartner consultancy took into account the potential impacts of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, although “the economic recovery of the digital market continues to drive investments in technology”.

However, the company reduced its forecasts compared to the previous report, in which it estimated an increase of 5,5%. In total, the value will reach 4.500 million dollars. Thus, the average increase in global costs will exceed that of EMEA, which was estimated at 4,6% by the consultant. By 2023, expectations are for a similar growth of 5% on all continents.

The Omicron variant will not impact with major changes in the upward trend of investment in new technologies such as the cloud.

Segments, business software will experience an 11% spending boom; IT services 7,9%; data center systems 4,7%; appliances 3,3%; and communications services 1,9%.  The consultant believes that, by 2025, organizations will increase their dependence on external consultants, as the increased urgency and the accelerated pace of change widen the gap between business strategies and their internal resources and capabilities.

On the other hand, says John-David Lovelock, vice president of research at Gartner, “2022 is the year the future of the CIO returns. It is now in a position to move beyond the critical short-term projects of the past two years and focus on the long term. At the same time, talent gaps and wage inflation will make it more reliant on consultancies and management services companies.”

In the year 2020, and within the enterprise application software market, the cloud market became larger than the local market for the first time, also due in part to the COVID-19 pandemic. By 2025, the consultant expects the size of this market to double. The cloud will squeeze this year's 11% of enterprise software spending, as organizations are focusing on using software-as-a-service (SaaS) models to gain flexibility and agility."
