From fiction to reality: control a robot with “mind power”

Science fiction films have always given us the perception that at some point in human history we would be able to do incredible things, only with the power of thought.

In the technical area, researchers follow the principle of trying to realize what some have only dreamed about. That is why a group of North American engineers, led by Dean Aslam (professor of electrical engineering at Michigan State University) created a system that allows command a robot with the power of thought.

But this process is not magical and the science behind it involves a hat with a sensor that sits on the user's forehead. This structure is similar to the electrodes used to obtain electroencephalograms. The sensor picks up brain electrical signals, which are extremely weak (about 10 microwatts), amplifies the signal and then the signal is analyzed by the control system.

Following this process, two actions may arise:  the robot walk or stop. The tests continue to increase the functionality of the project. But results like this are really encouraging.
