Apple devices with 5G are banned in Colombia

Due to a recent case in the courts of Colombia, related to the patent dispute in the country with Ericsson, the Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), was forced to stop selling all its devices with support for 5G network technology.

With this decision, Apple was technically banned from Colombia, and is now prevented from importing, selling or advertising its products in the country based on 5G networks. This applies to both iPhones and iPads, as long as they have some kind of support for the new generation of wireless networks.

In addition, Apple is still forced, by local laws, to have to alert users through its social platforms, or other similar methods, about the ban. Models that have already been sold can still remain in the country, but future sales are now prohibited.

BUT: Apple proposes Lockdown Mode to protect “interest” users

Something interesting about this case is the fact that, in Colombia, there is still no official 5G network for consumers in general. That is, the impact may be greater for anyone thinking of buying a 5G device, as Apple no longer has an option.

It should be remembered that Ericsson is in a real legal war with Apple regarding the unauthorized use of the company's patents on its devices with 5G support. Ericsson's goal will be for Apple to stop selling its devices with an integrated patent, or pay for their use through licensing.
