The new owner of Twitter, Elon Musk, announced that he has restored former US President Donald Trump's account on the social network, after promoting a poll that spoke in favor of the decision.

"The people spoke. Trump will be reinstated. Vox Populi, Vox Dei [The voice of the people is the voice of God],” announced Musk on Twitter.

The tycoon promoted a 24-hour poll, which ended today, to ask whether the former US president – who the platform suspended indefinitely citing risks of inciting violence, two days after supporters invaded the Capitol – should return to the social network.

According to the poll results, published by Musk, who received 15.085.458 votes, 51,8% were in favor of restoring Trump's account, while 48,2% voted against.

In early November, Musk said that Twitter "will not allow" those who have been removed from the social network for violating the rules to return to the platform until the company has a clear process for doing so.

Musk, who bought the social network for 44 billion dollars, also said in a series of 'tweets' that “Twitter's content moderation board will integrate representatives with widely differing opinions, which will undoubtedly include the civil rights community and groups fighting hate-fueled violence".

Before acquiring the social network, Musk said that one of the people he would like to welcome on Twitter was former President Donald Trump.

Musk announced on Saturday that he had unlocked the accounts of writer Jordan Peterson, comedian Kathy Griffin and conservative newspaper The Babylon Bee.

Peterson and Babylon Bee's profiles were blocked for posting content that disrespected the transgender community, while Griffin's was removed for impersonating Musk.
