Microsoft does not want to sleep in the shade when it comes to shopping, as there is information circulating that it has acquired GitHub and the information has already been officially announced. Cost of the operation: 7,5 billion USD!

What is GitHub?

GitHub is a vast code repository that has become popular with developers and companies hosting their projects, documentation, and code. Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC),, Amazon, Google and many other big tech companies use GitHub.

A Microsoft is the main contributor to the site and has more than 1.000 employees actively "pushing" repositories on the platform. Microsoft even hosts its own original Windows File manager source code on GitHub. The service was last valued at USD 2 billion in 2015, but it was not reported how much exactly Microsoft paid to acquire the platform.

With this acquisition, it is once again proven that Microsoft has been investing rapidly in open source technology since Satya Nadella took over as CEO. Microsoft has opened the PowerShell: Visual Studio Code and the mechanism Microsoft Edge JavaScript.

As part of the purchase, Microsoft will put a new CEO. Former Xamarin boss Nat Friedman will replace CEO and co-founder of GitHub, Chris Wanstrath. Microsoft says Wandstrath will join the company as a technical fellow.

It is not known that this acquisition will change the daily execution of GitHub. Microsoft has guaranteed that the service will continue to run independently and maintain its "developer spirit".
