During this week, the first IMAX movie theater in Angola was inaugurated, with the “Zap Cinemas” label. Certainly many people were curious and asked: what is IMAX all about?

IMAX is an acronym for (Istomach MAXimum) is a film format created by a Canadian company  IMAX Corporation, this standard has the ability to record and reproduce images larger than conventional ones, today we will understand how it actually works:

The IMAX Experience

As soon as you enter an IMAX movie theater you will soon notice on the huge screen in front of you and tell you already that there are two different types of room:

Room type IMAX: Dome

Dome:

A room of this type provides a hemispherical screen that covers entire room, Vaults can be up to 30 meters in diameter

Conventional room:

This type of room has a huge rectangular screen with about 16 meters high by 22 wide (but may be larger).

Whether you are in a “vault room” or a conventional room the effect is impressive, the screen is large enough to fill your field of view and as a result the feeling of immersion increases significantly. To fill this huge space, IMAX films are recorded on a different film; most conventional films are recorded in the 35-millimeter format, that is, the frame is 35 millimeters wide, which is then expanded by the projector to fill the screen, IMAX films are recorded at 70 millimeters and other words the size and the clarity are greater. This type of technology requires that the special effects “be on point” taking into account the final image quality, because films recorded in this format require a different production taking into account the recording locations and the special effects!

The final product (film) ends up getting so heavy that a conventional projector is previously discarded being a specific one needed for the task, all this technology comes to weigh the same as a small car all this is necessary for perfect and sharp images on huge screens .

IMAX Innovations

Since its debut, IMAX has raised the bar for the most realistic and immersive movie experience. Some of the innovations include:

  • Dome Technology - allows the image to appear in any peripheral field of view.
  • 3-D technology - allows the use of polarized glasses and LCD shutter technology to provide intense 3-D films.
  • 48 frames per second - Double the standard and significantly increases visual details.
  • Advanced sound systems - IMAX movie theaters use a 6-channel sound system (in some rooms there are even headphones)
