In an interview with Wired at CES in Las Vegas, inventor Thomas Serval who worked for giant companies like Google and Microsoft explained that he started creating the device about a year ago, after realizing that his daughter was not cleaning her teeth properly, which resulted in a gum disease. The Kolibree brush includes several sensors, such as an accelerometer, gyroscope and digital compass (magnetometer). This helps the app develop an understanding of each user's mouth and areas that are receiving too much or too little attention, or if the brush is simply being used incorrectly.
Serval also revealed that he has been working with dentists to ensure that the data acquired by the brush is not only useful for but also for healthcare professionals who can use the information to advise patients on the best brushing techniques. The brush software has an API available to third-party developers who will be able to create applications and tools for the hardware as well.
