US and UK sanction Russian cybercriminals from the Trickbot group

The United States and the United Kingdom announced the imposition of economic sanctions on 11 alleged cybercriminals, residing in Russia and members of the group Trickbot, several elements of which were targeted by similar sanctions in February.

"Russia has long been a haven for cybercriminals, particularly the Trickbot group“, indicated the US Treasury Department in a statement.

The 11 people targeted by these economic sanctions are administrators, analysts and computer programmers, he specified.

The Trickbot group is accused of having, at the peak of the covid-19 pandemic in 2020, attacked hospitals and health centers in the United States of America (USA) and installed 'ransomware' (a malicious 'software' that hijacks data for then charge for access) in three medical establishments in Minnesota, disrupting the functioning of their computer and telephone networks and triggering a diversion of ambulances, highlighted the US Treasury Department (equivalent to the Ministry of Finance).

Furthermore, a computer virus developed by this group infected millions of computers, including those of companies and individuals in the USA.

The Treasury Department also indicated that the Department of Justice will simultaneously release nine formal charges against nine people related to the Trickbot and Conti Ransomware malware programs, including seven people who were sanctioned today.
