Facebook turns off robots who invented their own language

O Facebook turned off robots who invented their own language. During tests conducted in the research laboratory of Facebook Artificial Intelligence, two artificial intelligence algorithms created an encrypted language that can not be understood by humans, which led to the deactivation of neural networks.

Facebook engineers shut down two artificial intelligence systems that, during a testing exercise, moved away from English and started talking to each other in what appeared to be chaotic language. But it was not: it was a new language in which the two seemed to communicate more easily with each other.

The idea of the system in particular was simple: to create robots that could trade exchanges. According to Facebook, two “robots” were presented with a collection of items, such as books, hats and balls, for example, and had to negotiate their division among themselves.

According to one of those responsible for the project, Dhruv Batra, explains that, “theRobots give up using understandable language and invent code words for themselves. For example, if I say 'the' five times, you interpret this as meaning that I want five units of that item".

The language was created by neural networks to facilitate communication and negotiation between the two agents, not to hide information from humans. However, as the researchers failed to understand the final outcome of the project, the two robots were deactivated.

  1. When we talk about artificial intelligence, we think of TERMINATOR GENESIS; EAGLE EYE and others, in which artificial intelligence tries to dominate the world. What scares me a little is when Facebook says that robots have invented their own language to communicate.
