The lack of financing is one of the main problems that has arisen and threatens the survival of Angolan startups, according to the person responsible for one of the several mobility applications in the country, Ivan Mugimbo.

Speaking in an interview with News, Ivan Mugimbo emphasizes that startups have been gaining ground in different sectors of the national economy, making a good assessment of their performance in the market.

"I think that startups have given the Angolan population a great opportunity here, because they allow people to be self-employed. This is one of the biggest factors that technology has brought. Today it is no longer necessary to have a conventional job, through digital solutions, startups, we have many young people who support their families with these businesses. Startups, these technological trends, are an advantage even for the population. Startups also allow the creation of jobs for other people around".

Still in his approach, the Yango manager highlights the lack of internet as one of the biggest difficulties we have here. By way of example, he reiterates that to calculate the price of the ride, in the case of mobility, you need to have very stable internet and, sometimes, there are glitches.

"We received some complaints about prices not being calculated correctly, because sometimes in the middle of the trip the driver or passenger is left without internet. The internet in Angola is not yet at the level it should be to keep up with the mass growth of startups. This negatively impacts the service".

BUT: Only 2% of startups in Angola received funding from Venture Capital

It should be noted that very recently the study on the “Entrepreneurship and Startups Ecosystem in Angola” had already revealed that taxes, lack of financing and regulation are the main problems facing national startups.

The investigation also showed that the main challenges facing startups in the country include the lack of specialized support to give them competence, product development capacity and money or liquidity.

The report also reported that the growth in the internet access rate, between 2019 and 2022, and, consequently, in the number of subscribers by around 48 percent as positive influencing factors for the growth of the digital ecosystem of startups in Angola.
