A FIFA will use a semi-automatic technology in the Qatar World Cup that alerts the team in the video referee (VAR) to off-game situations, announced, on Friday (1), the entity that governs world football.

According to the body, the system provides an automatic offside alert to the team at VAR, using a technology based on 3D animation, and has already been tested in previous FIFA tournaments. This new out-of-game technologyoffers a support tool for referees in the VAR and on the pitch and helps them to make the most accurate and quick decisions".

BUT: FIFA debuts new offside technology at the Club World Cup

Following the successful use of VAR technology at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said he would “harness the full potential of technology in football and further improve VAR".

The new technology uses 12 cameras mounted under the stadium's roof to track the ball and up to 29 data points from each individual player, 50 times a second, calculating their exact position on the pitch.

"This technology is the culmination of three years of research and testing dedicated to providing the very best for the teams, players and fans that will be coming to Qatar later this year, and FIFA is proud of that work.”, said Gianni Infantino.

The director emphasizes that “FIFA is committed to leveraging technology to improve the game of football at all levels, and the use of semi-automatic offside detection at the 2022 FIFA World Cup is the clearest evidence possible.".
