GGPEN presents picosatellites to Viana students

Several picosatellites with four CanSats and a CubeSat were presented at the project fair organized by the FJUN Group – Projeto Universitário, in Viana, Luanda, created by the Ambassadors for Space Education of the GGPEN.

The event took place under the motto “Space Technology”, where the ambassadors spoke about the design, construction and assembly of cansats, their subsystems and their purposes, to more than 300 secondary and higher education students.

"The interaction with the young people was positive and in the end they asked us to hold a workshop on satellite communication and the purpose of picosatellites“, said one of the representatives, highlighting that “the young people asked several questions, which were clarified in a pedagogical way and with concrete examples".

It should be noted that CanSat is a representation of a real satellite, in miniature, with little mass and, generally, below 300 grams. The challenge for students is to fit all the main subsystems found in a satellite, such as power, sensors and a communication system, into this minimum volume.

It offers a unique opportunity for students to have their first hands-on experience with real space projects. With it it is possible to experience many aspects of a real space mission, such as selecting the mission, designing the CanSat, integrating the components, programming the onboard computer, testing, preparing the launch and analyzing the telemetry data.

A CubeSat is a miniaturized satellite, the size of a shoebox, used for space research and amateur radio communications. The term is an acronym for “cube” and “satellite”.
