A Google continues to innovate in its productivity and communication suite. Following the recent I/O 2023 event, the company expanded access to Workspace Labs, and now the “help write me” is available in Gmail for Android and iOS. This new feature, based on generative artificial intelligence, offers assistance in writing emails, speeds up and improves the user experience.

How does the 'Help me write' feature work?

The 'Help me write' feature has been implemented in both the Android and iOS versions of Gmail, and is available to users enrolled in the Workspace Labs testing program. Upon accessing the feature, users are greeted with a brief introduction on generative artificial intelligence. Then a 'Help me write' button appears in the lower right corner of the screen.

By pressing this button, you can write a text or a sentence that you want to compose. The 'Create' button shows an animation of blue and purple waves as it works to generate suggestions. You have the option to generate a new text and give feedback before inserting it in the email.

Refine your text with AI

Once the text has been added in the compose window, pressing the 'Help me write' button again will offer different options to refine the message. These options include 'Formalize', 'Expand', 'Shorten', 'I feel lucky' and 'Write a draft'. Each option allows you to adjust and improve the message content according to the user's needs. The refinement process can take a few seconds, during which a progress animation is shown.

This tool offers the possibility of generating a new reply and replacing the text that already exists in the email. It's an effective way to improve your writing, save time, and ensure your message conveys exactly what you want to communicate.

Help Me Write is available as part of Google Workspace Labs, a test program that allows users to try out new AI features in Google workspace applications such as Gmail, Docs or Slides. However, Google cautions that you should not consider "Workspace Labs resources as medical, legal, financial or other professional advice".
