O Google announced on Tuesday (19) that it is investing in a product development center in Kenya as part of its USD 1 billion investment in Africa over the next five years.

The center will help create transformative products, offer services to people in Africa and offer job opportunities”for visionary engineers, product managers, UX designers and researchers to lay the groundwork for significant growth in the coming years".

The giant tech company also pointed out that the development will increase access to cheap and fast internet, support local entrepreneurs and SMEs and help non-profit organizations.

"Google Africa's mission is to make the Internet useful for Africans and to partner with African governments, policymakers, educators, entrepreneurs and businesses to shape the next wave of innovation in Africa”, said the vice president of products at Google, Suzanne Frey.

The big tech company recently opened an artificial intelligence center in Ghana, which Frey says is already hiring engineers, product managers, user experience designers and researchers to work at the new center.

"The potential for Africa to become a leading digital economy is on the horizon and Google is committed to accelerating Africa's digital transformation through human capital and enabling African-led solutions to African and global problems through better products.,” said Nitin Gajria, Google's managing director for Africa.

Google's investment comes after Microsoft unveiled a $5,2 million office and labs for its principal engineering centre, the African Development Center (ADC), after three years of operation in Kenya.
