William Xu, Director of the Board and President of Huawei's Strategic Research Institute, said recently that energy sustainability has been a major challenge facing all countries in the next decade.
“Global energy consumption is growing at an annual rate of 1,7%. Currently 85% of the energy comes from fossil fuels. Energy sustainability is a daunting challenge that we all face. By enabling a wide range of industries, ICT technology has the potential to reduce global carbon emissions by 20% in the next decade, ”said Xu.
Huawei recently announced that it will focus on innovating new technologies to help industries reduce their energy consumption for a low-carbon world.
In Africa too, many countries are increasingly adopting renewable energies to make a leap towards a sustainable energy future.
With its AI-powered network connectivity algorithm, Huawei has provided more than 200 power grid models to more than 30 countries and regions. This helped power plants to connect to networks in a stable manner in all scenarios and gradually made photovoltaics a conventional source of high quality energy.
In solar energy alone, Africa has made great strides in recent years, with more than 6.200 large-scale, commercial and industrial (C&I) and mini-network projects identified across the continent.
In addition, nine more African nations, in addition to South Africa and Egypt, are on their way to join the 'Gigawatt Club', an unofficial brand for the group of countries with installed capacity to produce a GW of solar energy.
Huang Su, Director of Digital Energy Business from Huawei Southern Africa, pointed out that almost half of the world's population without access to electricity lives in Sub-Saharan Africa.
"Therefore, there is a strong and urgent need to accelerate the growth of renewable energy across the region to ensure sufficient, affordable and reliable energy for all Africans and for countries to reap the benefits of a green economy," he says.
Huawei brought together more than 30 years of expertise and experience in digital technologies to make the generation and consumption of solar energy more efficient and reliable at an optimized cost.
