Richard Yu, executive president of Huawei Consumer BG, announced on Thursday a second version of the operating system that Huawei is developing to replace Android (from Google), HarmonyOS.
During the brand's annual developer conference in Shenzhen, China, Yu detailed that the plan is to have this operating system available on a wider range of devices, including smartphones.
As of today, Huawei will provide developers with a beta version of the Harmony OS 2.0 development system (SDK) that initially will only support smart watches, car entertainment systems and televisions.
During the conference, some of the features of Harmony OS 2.0 were shown, such as an interface that adapts to the device, improved security and a more intelligent speech recognition system. The capabilities of data transfer between devices have also been demonstrated.
"As of today, HarmonyOS is open for 128 KB-128 MB IoT devices, such as smart TVs, wearables, cars and more. In April 2021, we will open it for 128 MB-4 GB devices and in October 2021, HarmonyOS will be open for devices above 4 GB ", Richard Yu said of the strategy defined for HarmonyOS.
HarmonyOS is of strategic importance to Huawei due to the sanctions imposed by the United States government that prevent American companies, like Google, from doing business with Huawei, which prevents the Chinese company from using the full version of the Android operating system.
