Synergy between the top five technology domains is critical

The rotating president of Huawei, Guo Ping, explained, on the opening day of the Better World online conference, on how synergy between the top five technology domains will help unlock 5G's full potential to drive business success.

The event that took place in Shenzhen, China, on the 27th, featured guest speakers from China Telecom, Etisalat, MTN, GSMA and 3GPP / ETSI, also attended by thousands of online participants from over 80 countries, who analyzed how information and communication technology (ICT) can drive new economic growth, now and in a post-pandemic world.

Fight pandemic using technology

The pandemic has reshaped the way we live and work and has dealt a severe blow to the world economy. Fortunately, ICT offers a concrete set of tools to help fight COVID-19 on several fronts.

Guo Ping said that “as an ICT company, it is our responsibility to use the technology we have to help contain and defeat this pandemic”. Together with our partners and customers, including operators and companies of all types, we can use technological solutions to have a positive impact on our communities ”, he says.

“Based on our experience at the first critical points, we developed nine scenario-based solutions that use ICT technology to help fight the pandemic. Whether implementing a hospital network, remote consultation, online education or restarting governments and businesses, we share our experience and capabilities to help control the spread of the virus and reopen savings, ”says Huawei's rotating president.

Unlock the full potential of 5G: Synergy across the top five domains of technology

More than 90 million users worldwide already benefit from 5G. “As the global deployment of 5G starts to gain strength, we need to strengthen our focus on applications in the sector”, emphasizes Guo Ping. "This will help us to unlock the full potential of technology", he clarifies.

5G's business case is not just to offer better connectivity. When technologies such as 5G, computing, Cloud and AI come together, they reinforce and create countless opportunities in the five main domains of technology: connectivity, AI, cloud, computing and industry applications.

“Huawei has strengths in each of these areas. We can unite them and combine them to create solutions based on scenarios that meet the unique needs of our customers and partners. This is the key to unlocking the full potential of 5G and driving commercial success, ”says Guo Ping.

For 5G to be commercially successful, the entire industry needs to work together. Vertical sector applications can be replicated at scale only when unified industry standards and a collaborative ecosystem are in place.

"In the future, Huawei will double its efforts to equip our partners with the necessary resources," reiterates Huawei's rotating president. “We will promote joint innovation and drive growth for everyone in the value chain.”

Balancing short and long term objectives: implantation with precision and maximum value

Guo says that, “given the current economic environment, operators need to focus on short and long term goals. The most accurate implementation is to understand how they can enhance the value of their networks. “Huawei makes three suggestions for this:

  • First, operators must prioritize the user experience and invest money where it is most needed to enhance the value of existing networks.
  • Second, operators must make the most of existing 4G and FTTx networks and integrate them with new 5G networks through holistic coordination and precise planning.
  • Third, 5G deployment plans must prioritize industry critical access points and applications.

The opening day of the Better World online conference also featured a presentation by China Telecom's executive vice president and executive director, Liu Guiqing, who shared the operator's strategy and applications to drive digital transformation across sectors through the convergence of Cloud and networks.

In turn, the CTO of Etisalat International, Hatem Bamatraf, presented Etisalat's experience using ICTs to combat the pandemic and drive economic recovery. MTN Group Marketing executive, Bernice Samuels, talked about how MTN will accelerate its digital transformation process to extend the benefits of a modern and connected life to everyone in the post-pandemic era. For its part, CTO of the GSMA, Alex Sinclair, shared ideas on how ICT can enable new economic development.

Finally, ETSI's head of 3GPP MCC and CTO, Adrian Scrase, underlined that an open, transparent, equal and impartial environment for industry collaboration is central to establishing unified standards and promoting shared success worldwide. The Better World 2020 Conference was broadcast live in Chinese, English, Spanish, French, Russian, Korean, Japanese and Arabic. For more information, click here.
