Instagram launches new parental control mechanisms

O Instagram launched new parental controls in the UK, allowing parents to set a daily time limit and schedule usage breaks for their children.

Meta, which owns the app, reported that parents and guardians of users under 18 can now set a daily time limit of between 15 minutes to 2 hours before the app becomes unavailable with a black screen.

The new supervision features will also allow guardians of children to see which accounts their children have reported and why, as well as access who follows them and who they follow.

BUT: It is now possible to pin publications or 'reels' to the Instagram profile

Parents can now initiate these supervision tools by sending their child an invitation, which previously only children could send.

These features went into effect this Tuesday in the UK and in March they had already been implemented in the US. The social network will now add this capability in Japan, Australia, Ireland, Canada, France and Germany later this month.

The tech giant, which also owns Facebook and WhatsApp, plans to launch the tools worldwide by the end of the year.
