Institutions advised to promote alternative payment systems

Promoters of alternative payment solutions to traditional banking are advised to consolidate the expansion of this type of service to the non-banking population, in the opinion of Pedro Castro e Silva, administrator of the National Bank of Angola (BNA).

According to the Administrator, who was recently appointed deputy governor of the BNA, he informed that this idea arises from the fact that the banked Angolan civil society already uses the instruments provided by local banks that are mobile, exemplifying the Multicaixa card and the solutions mobile banking.

Angola currently has 16 companies providing payment services, most of which offer mobile wallet services, along with alternative payment solutions launched by traditional banks, so Pedro Caniço raises financial inclusion.

For the manager, companies that use this type of solution, being more agile, quickly attract customers, and one of them, based on the number of customers, is already larger than most commercial banks licensed by the BNA.

He suggested that person-to-person transfers should be prioritized, similarly to what happened in other markets, since a large part of national economic operations is informal and the agents operating there are individuals.

Still in the interview with journalists, the deputy governor of the BNA revealed that the development of the quick platform, an instant transfer service system, which will ensure interoperability between the various Mobile Money solutions.

As for interoperability, the Administrator which has proven to be critical to the mobile money in other African countries and efforts will be made to speed up the accession process for participants to this platform.

The manager also stressed that financial inclusion should be for the population and increase equal opportunities to access physical money, as well as savings, deposit, transfers, credit and other services.
