Meta threatens to withdraw Facebook and Instagram from Europe due to data protection

A Meta has been involved in some controversies related to user data in recent times, but it seems that the company is now leaving a threat, especially for the authorities in Brussels.

in a recent document issued to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the company states that if it fails to reach an agreement with European authorities on the sharing of data about European users to the US, the “future of Facebook e Instagram in Europe may be at risk”.

At issue are the new data protection rules in Europe, which prevent the data of users of platforms based in this region from being directly shared with platforms based in the US, because platforms in the US allegedly do not provide the recommended level of privacy for users and their data.

Before this rule, Meta could store the data of platform users in the European Union on servers in the USA, without any problems. But this cannot now be done, and all private data must remain on servers in the European zone.

In view of this situation, Meta claims that if the company is unable to transfer the data to the US, the provision of its services on European platforms may be considerably compromised. This includes services like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and others.

The document cites that, in part, these new rules are causing the company to lose money, as it restricts the possibility of sharing data to the company's center. Meta claims that such a measure could seriously compromise the company's long-term financial results.

It is important to remember that Meta has been experiencing some fines in recent times, derived from data protection in Europe. One of the examples is the fine applied to the WhatsApp, the company's messaging service, last year, considered one of the highest concerning data protection in Europe ever.
