Microsoft announced the closure of Internet Explorer, a leading browser between the late 1990s and the first decade of the millennium. Online services such as Office 365, OneDrive or Outlook, among others, no longer support the latest version of the browser. It should be noted that the Microsoft Teams web application stops supporting Internet Explorer 11 as early as November this year. Support for the latest version of the browser will end only for Microsoft online products and not completely on Windows 10.

In a note released, the company recommends that customers make the transition to Microsoft Edge, an alternative browser to Internet Explorer launched in 2015 by the company. “We are committed to helping this transition to be as smooth as possible, ”says the statement. “Our customers have been using IE since 2013, a time when the online environment was far less sophisticated than those we live in now. Since then, new browsers - like Microsoft Edge - have offered better and more innovative experiences. "

The process of ending Internet Explorer started some time ago and this is another step in that journey - recently, the iconic browser celebrated 25 years of existence. Although Microsoft itself no longer supports Internet Explorer 11, which is a clear message about the future of the browser, the company stresses that the browser will continue to receive “security updates” and “technical support” during the life cycles of operating systems in which it is included - Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.

In practice, this means that Internet Explorer 11 support will only end when these versions of Windows no longer receive updates: Windows 10, Windows 8.1 Update, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016 and later.

According to July data from consultancy NetMarket Share, Internet Explorer is the fourth most used browser globally on desktop and notebook computers, with 4,23% of the total. Chrome, Google's browser, is the leader with 71,11% of the total, followed by Microsoft Edge, with 8,09%. In the 2000s, Internet Explorer was present on 90% of computers.
