A Microsoft has just announced that it will expand its initiative called Airband, which aims to connect 40 million people to the Internet by July 2022. The program, launched in 2017 with the aim of improving rural Internet access in the U.S., will now be expanded to provide better Internet access in Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa.
What is this project about?
Accelerate Internet access globally, focusing on developing countries.
To support the project, the company intends to form partnerships with local organizations to understand the specific needs of each area; working with governments to remove regulatory barriers to technology and with Internet Service Providers to provide Internet access to end users.
Microsoft is not the only company that focuses on connecting several developing countries on matters related to the Internet. The initiative "Next Billion Users”Aims to make its services available to more people around the world, while Facebook has explored everything from drones Internet distributors to satellites in their quest to allow more people to connect to the Internet. The motivation is simple; for all three companies, every new Internet user is another potential customer.
