The main legacy that the Covid-19 pandemic could leave in the education sector in Mozambique is the use of technology, however, there is a need to improve it to be more comprehensive and of quality, argue managers of higher education institutions.

The effects of the disease created an unprecedented situation in the education sector in the country, as well as in the world, due to the forced closure of educational establishments in the context of restrictive measures to prevent the disease.

In order to continue the teaching and learning process, educational institutions had to quickly adapt to the new reality. The situation forced teachers to change their whiteboards and students their desks for digital screens and apps.

The use of technology, through “online” classes, was the support used by universities, and beyond, to continue teaching and not jeopardize the progress of the school calendar.

BUT: Mozambique. Education challenged to introduce financial literacy into the curriculum

In this model, the class is taught by the teacher in his own home and transmitted live through digital technologies, so that students can follow and participate in real time, also in their respective homes or anywhere as long as they have internet access.

According to Elias Majante, Pedagogical Director at Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM), with the interruption of face-to-face classes, digital tools contributed to the continuity of learning.

“With the support of the UEM Information Technology Center and distance learning, it promotes the use of digital resources, which constituted an opportunity to disseminate and accelerate their use. We had to learn something that was never developed in our institution and to face the technology in a very short time”, he explained.

Majante said that the lack of mastery in the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the teaching and learning process constitutes a challenge, which is why it was necessary to train patients and students.
