[Mozambique] The path of technology and the role of UEM highlighted in the Internet Governance Forum

The second edition of the Internet Governance Forum took place at a particular time, when Mozambique is celebrating 30 years since it became connected to the internet. This is a historic milestone that cannot be dissociated from Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM), due to its direct contribution to this process.

Manuel Guilherme Júnior, rector of UEM, said at the opening session that the institution he headed celebrated 30 years of internet connection, aware of the challenges that still persist, related to the promotion of greater digital inclusion and an inclusive cybernetic environment, with relevant services to the citizen and in a safe way, as well as the adequacy and introduction of new curricula adjusted to the emerging dynamics.

"To this end, we rely on the collaboration of the various institutions represented here, as we believe that only inter-institutional collaboration can guarantee results adjusted to the various challenges arising from this process.", said.

He stressed that the development and application of principles, norms, rules, decision-making procedures and common programs that define the evolution and use of the internet in the country is imperative.

Considers that the second edition of the Internet Governance Forum in Mozambique, under the motto “For an Accessible, Inclusive, Secure and Resilient Internet”, appears to be a unique opportunity to deepen the role of the institution it directs in the context of the objectives set out for this event.

Among the contributions that the Eduardo Mondlane University has given in the context of the development of this significant portion of the virtual space, today very important for the development of nations, the first connection in 1992 that allowed connecting Mozambique to the global network stands out, being the third country in Africa to do so, after South Africa and Egypt.
