MTN launches 5G internet plans for homes in South Africa

The battle between operators for the domestic fixed-wireless broadband market has accelerated in South Africa, with MTN announcing last Friday that it will offer 5G without limit for 999 Rands/month, equivalent to 37.000 Kz in the National Bank of Angola.

MTN has updated its plan MyMTN Home Uncapped, which until now has only been available in a 4G/LTE version, to 5G, which should offer users in coverage areas significantly better network latencies, or network round-trip times that are more similar to fiber services.

BUT: Internet accessibility gap widens in Africa

However, the R999 5G plan is capped at 50mb/s and has a 1TB fair usage policy. A R1 per month plan doubles the speed to 099mb/s if you offer 100TB of data before the fair usage policy is applied. Offers are available on 2-month contracts, or month-to-month if the customer already owns a 24G router.

Usage policy

The fair usage policy states that once the 1TB and 2TB limits are reached, depending on the package speeds are reduced to 4mb/s for the rest of the month. MTN has developed MyMTN Home Uncapped 5G plans using the latest 5G network technologies to provide unlimited data connectivity to customers' homes in 125 coverage areas across all provinces.
