NASA reaches record speed in transferring data between Earth and Space

A NASA managed to set a new transfer speed record between Earth and Space, now registering 200Gbps.

The feat was achieved by the TeraByte Infrared Delivery (TBIRD) system, which consists of a small satellite that uses a laser to transmit this data. Note that, previously, the record was 100Gbps and was recorded in June 2022 – a considerable advance in a period of less than a year.

Naturally, this advance is significant for the future of communications between Earth and space missions, especially at a time when there is a growing ambition of space agencies.

"Imagine the capacity of space science instruments when they are designed to take full advantage of advances dedicated to velocities, elevating what Artificial Intelligence can do with this enormous amount of data", noted one of those responsible for the TBIRD mission, Beth Keer, according to the Interesting Engineering website.
