Nigeria to announce it will launch its digital currency

Since its creation, cryptocurrencies have never had a general consensus in the computer environment. While for some it is nothing more than a fraudulent scheme whose sole objective is to make easy money, for others it is the future when it comes to the market and the financial sector.

Because of this contradiction in thinking, several countries around the world try to deal with the issue of cryptocurrencies in the best possible way. Along these lines, Nigeria announced that it will also launch its own digital currency.

This decision by Nigeria only shows that this is how some countries are reacting to the dynamics of cryptocurrencies, that is, they end up developing their own digital currencies, thus adapting to the trend of evolution and modernization of the financial system.

According to one Reuters news released this Thursday (7), the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will launch the enaira, its own digital currency, an announcement made by the governor of the Nigerian bank Godwin Emefiele during a videoconference, where he also said that the currency would reach the financial market in a few days.

According to the executive, the launch of this digital currency will make Nigeria “in one of the first countries in Africa, and in fact in the world, to adopt the digitization of its national currency”.

This decision was already expected by some experts, taking into account that the Central Bank of Nigeria had already announced its plans to launch its own digital currency in the year 2021, after the African country in February banned banks and financial institutions to negotiate or facilitate transactions through cryptocurrencies.

BUT:  Nigeria prepares to launch its own cryptocurrency

Previously, Emefiele had pointed out that the eNaira currency would act as a wallet where customers could keep existing funds in their bank accounts, which would speed up financial inclusion and also allow for cheaper and faster shipment flows.

The CBN has appointed Bitt Inc, based in Barbados, as its technical partner for the development of the eNaira digital currency.
